COS V P P S P Q R OPTIMO PRINC Victoria with laurel wreath to the left, standing on a platform decorated with a shield. Consul for the fifth time, Father of the Nation, Optimo princ the greatest leader, SPQR Senatus Populusque Romanus, “The Senate and the People of Rome”, the phrase that served as the official name of the Roman Empire. Trajan was given this honorary title by the Senate in 103 and subsequently proudly stated it on a whole series of coins. Cos V indicates the 5th reign.
